On request, the Federal Archives supply digital copies of their documents. A charge is made for this service. However, customers may normally also photograph archive records themselves.
The procedure for ordering digital reproductions is as follows:
You must register before you can order reproductions. You can then use all the functions of the online offering as well as additional local offerings in the Federal Archives.
In most cases, you can order reproductions of documents from the Federal Archives via Swiss Archives. A charge is normally made for this service. Details of fees are set out in the SFA Fees Ordinance of 1 December 1999 (SR 172.041.15) (PDF, 10 kB, 28.02.2006) (in German). To order digital reproductions, proceed as follows:
- Digital copy of a dossier
When ordering a dossier on Swiss Archives select “Reproduction (digital)” under “Delivery” and send your order.
You will then receive information about the size of the dossier and the fees incurred. Once your confirmation has been received, the order will be carried out.
- Digital copies of individual documents (only available in the reading room)
Complete an “Attachment for reproduction orders” for each dossier in the reading room and hand it to a member of reading room staff, together with the relevant container.
To enable your order to be processed electronically, you must then order the dossier again via Swiss Archives and select “Reproduction (digital)” under “Delivery”.
Further information about the order process and dossiers that cannot be ordered via Swiss Archives can be found under ordering.
Delivery of reproductions
The Federal Archives will only supply digital copies of image and text documents in the following formats:
- Text documents
Dossiers consisting primarily of text will be digitised in colour with a resolution of 300dpi and delivered in archivable PDF-A format.
- Image documents
Dossiers consisting primarily of images will be digitised in colour with a resolution of 300dpi and delivered in archivable TIFF format.
For film and sound storage media, the Federal Archives will select the appropriate file format on a case-by-case basis.
Digitised materials will normally be delivered within 14 days. The invoice will be sent by post. Further information on delivery of digital archive records can be found under ordering.
Making your own reproductions
Customers may normally also photograph archive records themselves in the reading room. However, it is not possible to make paper copies on site. The use of scanners is not permitted. Equipment for making copies of other media (e.g. film) is in some cases available in the reading room. For further information, please contact a member of reading room staff.
